The gender communication article is really interesting (is anyone else covering that in their presentation?) I found both of these articles in the database: Communications and Mass Media Complete.
Holmstrom, A. J. (2009). Sex and gender similarities and differences in communication values in same sex and cross sex friendships. Communication Quarterly. 57(2), 224-258.
The article on non-verbal behavior is also interesting:
Prinsen, T. & Punyanunt-Carter, N. M. (2009). The difference in nonverbal behaviors and how it changes in different stages of a relationship. Texas Speech Communication Journal. 34(1), 1-7.
So, I'd love some advice. I was thinking of breaking up my presentation into three chunks because my learning group is interested in non verbal comm, electronic comm, and gender comm. I was thinking about opening with charades (asking for one or two volunteers to act out something) and after that I would segue into a discussion about non-verbal communication/behavior. Next, have them take a few minutes to compose a text or email (I'll give a topic) and then have one or two volunteer to read theirs. We can then talk about how we interpreted their message, which will segue into my discussion on electronic comm. Finally, I was going to find a youtube video or movie clip of a gender discussion gone wrong, which would move us into the final portion. I don't know if I have enough time for all of that though...what do you guys think?
Hey, Elizabeth. It seems like you have a good outline for your presentation. I like that you've found ways to break it up- I'm sure that will help keep people's attention.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to actually formulate how my presentation is going to go but I'm thinking I'll just stick with one topic (non-verbal communication) and maybe expand if I'm super short on time. I was also thinking of doing charades as an introduction. I think I'm then going to give information on how babies communicate without words, then maybe a more general view of how we use non-verbal communication in a broad sense, then talk about cross-cultural nonverbal comm. and how different gestures mean different things in different cultures. I'm planning on doing this through some lecture accompanied by videos (this might get a little tricky depending on what kinds of things I can find).
Anyway, I just wanted to give you and everyone else an idea of where my head is at.
There's a great article I found on Blackwell Reference Online called Interpersonal Communication, Sex and Gender Differences in The International Encyclopedia of Communication.
ReplyDeleteMy ideas sound a lot like yours, Elizabeth, because my group was interested in communication between the genders, too - I'm going to talk about flirting and chatting up women, and I found some great videos (some of which are meant to be taken seriously, though it's hard to!) on Youtube. I have a lot of things I want to do, and need to narrow them down! Audience participation, games, videos, a handout...
