Tomorrow!

I'm not feeling like an expert in interpersonal communication?  Am I alone in this?

Videos on gestures!

Hi ya'll!

I'm doing a small section on gestures and am planning on using these videos that show how gestures are not always similar culture to culture. I figured I would post them just in case someone else is needing to fill a little extra time.

First: Inglourious Basterds bar scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TJJtEIcKjU (It's gory at the end, FYI) The gesture he uses for the number three at 0:49 is an English counting gesture. Germans use the thumb, pointer, and middle finger to gesture the number three.

I'm also probably going to use this video from Japanesepod101.com from their video series on learning Japanese body language and gestures. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zD3xPFui8bA

Changing tactics and Dr. Dow

Hi all,
After Mirah posted her class 2 post, I asked her about the Bb blog cites for all of us and told her we had an offsite blog going instead, and sent her the address. My apologies for not informing you all sooner. So this will one of our records of collaboration for her, along with other forms of sharing we happened to do.
My presentation took a decided turn today as I was thinking about what I really wanted to bring up, and I kept thinking about a TED talk that was longer then I wanted but really brought up some very prescient and current points I wanted to discuss. So, I'm going that way, professional or not, I think it will relax me enough to at least make myself presentable and not just a puddle.
I have to keep reminding myself that Mirah wanted us to have fun with this.

Presentation "Mood"

How casual (or professional) are you planning on making your presentation? So far mine is looking like it will be extremely casual so I'd be interested to hear what other people are doing...

History & theories

Are any of you touching on the theories surrounding interpersonal communication?

Body Language Video

Here is an interesting video on body language with 2 minutes interviews with CEOs and a questionnaire about their body language. The questionnaire has some crappy questions, but some of them are useful. I might show a section or two of the video to my group and then discuss it.

Some other sources for nonverbal

Hey all,
Here is a site that has a lot of resources re: nonverbal issues. It is Northern Virginia Community College. Nice design....

http://novaonline.nvcc.edu/eli/spd110td/interper/message/linksnonverbalresearch.html

Here is the overall list of resources on this site...http://novaonline.nvcc.edu/eli/spd110td/interper/index.html

I am still looking at nonviolent communication as a way to prepare for active listening and reframing, such as in a reference interview. I am struck by the amount of parallels I am finding in the research, as I went from nonviolent communication, which brought me to empathy and back to interpersonal communication. I guess I am in the ball park.

In my presentation, I will speak on context for the communication between two people, and how that shapes the success of the interaction. Moving to nonviolent communication, I will share the ideas that we all want to connect, and to do that, we have to understand and reach out to each person's needs (ideal for librarians, eh?), rather than jumping to snap judgements. I expect to have each member of the group share a brief comment in which they reacted negatively, which will let me bring it to reframing it so it is about understanding a person's needs, rather than an attack or slight.

I like the idea of adding a little on nonverbal communication - eye rolling, shrugging, something that can convey a person not very in tune to the dyad. I will explore this.

I think I read what John and Elizabeth are doing...what about the rest?

reference interviews

If some are tying in interpersonal communication with the reference desk dynamics here are a few good vids.
One is of a bad ref. interview:

one is of a good reference video;

I too, am using charades to point out non-verbal communication. As a mid-point in my power point. I'd like to end my talk with the changes in interpersonal comm through electronic means. And I'm trying to figure out how to illustrate the idea that basically people have lost the personal in the social media era. i.e. instead of knocking on someone's door to get them, we just text from the curb in our cars.
If anyone has any idea about how to illustrate that (or if that seems too far fetched) let me know.
Also, I think there's a space for the new social media electronic language in the interpersonal - OMG! ROTFLOL; but that too may be too far afield, thoughts, if any?
thanks in advance,
John

An update and outline of where I'm at

Hello, Expert Group.

I just wanted to share with you all a more refined version of where I'm at with my presentation.
I've decided to stick with non-verbal communication (NVC from here on out) exclusively. I'm using PowerPoint (yuck, I know!). I'm going to start with the development of NVC in babies. From there I'm going to break up the presentation by playing a mini-game of charades. I'm planning on doing 2-3 rounds. I don't know exactly what the words are going to be yet, but I want to do one really easy on (like "drive") that has a pretty straight-forward motion associated with it and the something harder (like "gas light") that will be more difficult as to make the point that there are varying levels of common non-verbal language.
After that, I'm going to basically outline Iris Grace Gonzalez's stages of nonverbal communications. I like how in her article the phases are outlined out and she gives a lot of good examples that I'll try to mirror. I'm also going to try to make this part fairly interactive with my audience by asking them questions (like "have you ever experienced miscommunication via text message or email? Why do you think this is? Lack of tone or inflection, maybe?). I'm also thinking I'll bring some "sloppy" clothes to put on over my outfit to illustrate how appearance is part of NVC. Things like that to breakup the monotony that can occur via PowerPoint.
I also found a couple videos I may show, depending on how much time the rest of it takes up. I'll post those links at the end of this post.
So, I think that's what my presentations is going to look like. It's likely to change some depending on how the flow goes once it's all laid out.

This one is about one minute long and has a group of women demonstrating what different hand signs mean in different countries.

This one has people from 3 different cultures demonstrate what different gestures mean.

A quick video on social media techniques

From a TED conference, a quick talk about how people try to use their mobiles when with someone else. It's pretty funny and he makes a good point at the end. The point is, how can we have meaningful moments when we're constantly trying to record and share that moment? It under 4 minutes so if you're looking at electronic communication this might be helpful.

I'm curious, can we embed a video like this on a laptop power point that will play to our large groups, since I assume we wont have access to the podium computer? (And since I wont have a password to the PSU wifi.)

question...

first of all, i apologize for blogging three times in a row. i have a question for you guys...i found this website pretty helpful with explanations about facial expressions and types of non-verbal communication but i wasn't sure if it was reputable or not.  after getting called out during my last group presentation about an unverified source i feel a little nervous about it.  how do i know if a site is okay?

Gender Communication and Non-verbal

The gender communication article is really interesting (is anyone else covering that in their presentation?) I found both of these articles in the database: Communications and Mass Media Complete.

Holmstrom, A. J. (2009). Sex and gender similarities and differences in communication values in same sex and cross sex friendships. Communication Quarterly. 57(2), 224-258.

The article on non-verbal behavior is also interesting:

Prinsen, T. & Punyanunt-Carter, N. M. (2009). The difference in nonverbal behaviors and how it changes in different stages of a relationship. Texas Speech Communication Journal. 34(1), 1-7.

So, I'd love some advice.  I was thinking of breaking up my presentation into three chunks because my learning group is interested in non verbal comm, electronic comm, and gender comm.  I was thinking about opening with charades (asking for one or two volunteers to act out something) and after that I would segue into a discussion about non-verbal communication/behavior.  Next, have them take a few minutes to compose a text or email (I'll give a topic) and then have one or two volunteer to read theirs.  We can then talk about how we interpreted their message, which will segue into my discussion on electronic comm.  Finally, I was going to find a youtube video or movie clip of a gender discussion gone wrong, which would move us into the final portion.  I don't know if I have enough time for all of that though...what do you guys think?

Here's a start...Some resources on Nonverbal Communicaiton

Blake, J., Vitale, G., Osborne, P., & Olshansky, E. (2005). A cross-cultural comparison

of communicative gestures in human infants during the transition to language. Gesture. 5 (1) 201-217. Database: Communication & Mass Media Complete

-This might not be the direction some of you want to go, but it’s a look at how babies communicate before they acquire verbal language skills.

Gonzalez, I.G. (1978). Nonverbal Aspects of Interpersonal Communication.

Communication. 7 (1), 205-212. Database: Communication & Mass Media Complete

-Starting on page 3, Gonzalez describes seven categories of nonverbal behavior.

Program on Negotiation. (2008) How Body Language Affects Negotiation. Negotiation.

Database: Communication & Mass Media Complete

-This is a pamphlet from Harvard. The original source information for the pamphlet is denser and a little harder to wade through. It can be located here:

van Dijk, E., van Kleef, G.A., Steinel, W., & van Beest, I. (2008). A social functional

approach to emotions in bargaining: When communicating anger pays and when it backfires. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. 94 (4), 600-614.
